I found out about David McCormack years back on a music site. The Truth About Love got some attention at the time and so I gave it a shot. As I spent more time listening, I realized the man is fucking amazing. Unfortunately, despite the interest at the time, it seemed like most people simply forgot about him entirely... at least within that circle of members.
McCormack used to head a band by the name of Custard. Their songs are generally a lot more goofy in nature, if that's your thing. Personally, I think his work with The Polaroids (essentially his solo material) is significantly better. So far that just includes The Truth About Love and Candy, both of which are excellent, well layered and have a dark sense of humor.
Over the years I've managed to collect almost everything he's put out. Most of it isn't terribly easy to find and some of it verges on nearly impossible (particularly if you don't want to spend $30 on a CD). I'm still missing The Matterhorn (apparently some electronic side project of his) and an album he made with his then-wife under the name of the The Titanics. I have MP3s of the latter, but I've yet to hear a single thing off of The Matterhorn.
He's releasing a split EP and apparently a new LP sometime this year. There's also a country music side project known as The Millionaires. Here's the problem: David McCormack is Australian. The EP and side project are only being sold at shows. Obviously I can't go. I've found one place pre-ordering The Millionaires album, but again, it's over $30. Sadly, David McCormack hasn't answered my e-mail asking if there's anything I can do to get this through a more legitimate channel.
Hopefully the LP won't be as difficult to get a hold of.
Anyway, like most things I listen to, I don't think any one track is really going to encompass McCormack's work. This track is off of Candy, but if you like it, I really suggest hunting down The Truth About Love. It's the only CD of his that's "relatively" easy to find in the US. I went with a slower, darker song, but he also has fast, upbeat songs as well. It's kind of all over the place.
